South Campus Gateway Announces Environmentally Friendly Initiatives

South Campus Gateway is preparing to roll out a series of "Green It" initiatives designed to promote environmental awareness, recycling and energy efficiency.  The Gateway management team hopes the mixed-use project on the edge of The Ohio State University campus will become a leader in applying "green" ideas in a business setting.

Among the initiatives underway are:

  • Gateway collects and recycles all sustainable waste daily from its retailers, offices and apartments.  More than 12 tons of waste is recycled monthly.  The compactors installed to handle the recycling cost nearly $70,000.
  • The Gateway parking garage now features approximately 100 bicycle, scooter and motorcycle parking spaces on its first level.
  • The Gateway Garage has designated "premier" parking spaces on the first level for use by motor vehicles categorized as "Low Emission / Fuel Efficient" or "No Emission" vehicles. Click here for the list of approved vehicles.

Among the ideas and concepts being explored are:

  • Develop and implement a composting program for all food waste from restaurants and residents.
  • Extend Gateway’s "Green It" education initiatives to include a web page and an electronic information kiosk.
  • Develop and install as a pilot project several "plug-in" parking stations for hybrid and electric vehicles on the Gateway garage roof.  The "plug-in" stations would be powered by solar panels.
